The project:
Bettaquip were awarded the contract for the design and complete
refurbishment of the Kitchen and Servery at Queens Foundation
College in Birmingham. This included the fit out of brand new
catering equipment together with all building works to transform
the catering facility into a modern hygienic facility. The main
challenge was one of timescale due to a short lead in period and
site time being restricted to five weeks of the summer
holiday.
The result:
Bettaquip delivered on their promise to deliver the new state of
the art facility in time for the start of the new term despite the
setback of losing two weeks of the programme following the
discovery of asbestos during the survey prior to the contract start
date.
The works involved the total strip out of the existing kitchen
equipment, mechanical and electrical supplies. Modifications
were made to the walls to enable the Servery to be incorporated
into the kitchen space. The wash up area was completely
refurbished. New M&E services were run to suit the new layout
prior to the installation of Altro Whiterock PVC cladding to the
walls, a suspended ceiling and non-slip Altro vinyl floor.
A new central island canopy and extraction system
incorporating fresh air input was installed together with a
stainless steel service chamber to house the gas, water and
electrical supplies for the cooking equipment.
The new open Kitchen is equipped with Electrolux cooking
equipment including a 6/GN 1/1 stacked Combination Oven, Bratt Pan,
Fryer, 6 Burner Gas Range and Salamander. A dual compartment
dual temperature Coldroom suite was installed with remote
compressors sited externally.
The bespoke servery was finished with stainless steel top
and laminate front panels. It incorporated the hot section for the
main meals and hot desserts as well as a chilled section for the
cold elements.
The response:
